This book of fairy tales is written in the oral tradition, incorporating the lusty, colorful language of the Neapolitans who related these tales to Giambattista Basile. They were translated from the Italian by Sir Richard Burton, fresh from translating The Arabian Nights and his vivid, embellished style of the East is well suited to these stories.4/5(1). Il Pentamerone, as it's otherwise called, is I think my favorite collection of fairy tales. Call me morbid, but I love the humor and absurdity of Basile's stories, unbound as they are from propriety and Christian morals/5.
